A Solitary Shisha Affair
After today's lunch with my colleagues, one headed alone towards the shisha shop for a nice smoke. My friend commented on how you can enjoy a shisha alone. I too have the notion that shisha smoking is at its best when it's shared. Shisha smoking is a social affair very much like how Filipino teens would gather friends around for a leisurely afternoon of conversation and beer. We figured shisha is very much like a cigarette. Once you get into the habit it's hard to break the habit. You just have to pop in a butt between your lips after meals. As for the ladies of my family-in-law, nothing is more relaxing than the gathering in the ladies' sitting room late in the afternoon with two homemade shisha pipes to accompany the gossips, advise and old stories. I once observed the whole affair with round eyes and mouth slightly ajar. It's amazing to see old and young ladies alike catching in sinful smokes of pure tobacco. In my own family no one living smokes rolled up tobacco leaves while chewing "nganga"*. Let me see, when I grow old and I'll be forced to take up either one as a "hobby", I think I'll go for a flavored shisha =)
* i actually don't know what is that thing old Filipino folks chew on while smoking tobacco leaves. The same one that makes their saliva brownish or reddish
